Robert Griffin, Principal and Technical Advisor
As Principal of Abandoned Property Services LLC, he provides technical support based upon his thirty one years experience in the field. He adds the depth of knowledge in all aspects of abandoned property issues and has a wide range of experience in various industries. He consults with his staff and those of the clients on issues that are uncovered during the engagements.
Prior to joining Abandoned Property Services LLC as Principal, Robert was a Senior Manager of Unclaimed Property Services for the Eastern Region with Deloitte & Touche LLP. In addition to the role, Robert provided technical assistance and reviewed project workpapers and deliverables for twenty staff members across the country, and led two of the firm’s formal extensive one-week training sessions.
Prior to joining Deloitte & Touche, he was Director of Audits for the Comptroller of the State of New York for over twenty years and headed the unclaimed property program where he supervised a staff of twenty eight professionals in the performance of audits of major financial institutions, insurance companies, stock brokers, retailers, mutual funds, trust companies, transfer agents, manufacturers, importers, service companies, and Fortune 500 companies.
He created detailed audit guides, audit programs and procedures and conducted in house staff training for all of the New York Comptroller’s audit staff. He developed and implemented New York s voluntary compliance program for unclaimed property. Robert has a proven track record of accomplishments in mutually beneficial agreements between the government and the holders, and has been involved with over 1,000 audits, with the majority in the financial services industry. He was instrumental in providing litigation support to the Attorney General of the State of New York in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Delaware vs. New York that resulted in additional federal common law regarding the rules of jurisdiction for unclaimed property.
Robert has frequently spoken at meetings of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, auditor’s seminars and professional association conferences.
Karen Anderson, Senior Compliance Advisor
Karen is a 20-year veteran of the unclaimed property industry. In her APS role, Karen guides businesses in achieving and sustaining compliance and in minimizing their unclaimed property liability Further, Anderson provides holder education via the APS and trade association websites, speaking engagements and publications.
Prior to joining APS, Karen was avice president at Unclaimed Property Recovery and Reporting (UPRR) where for 12 years she assisted Fortune 500 companies in resolving unclaimed property compliance issues and with annual reporting. Prior to her years at UPRR, Karen served as a member of the policy staff of former Illinois Governor where she developed policy/programs relating to state business regulation. For 5 years, Ms. Anderson served as Illinois’ unclaimed property administrator and on the board of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA). After leaving state service, Karen was the first NAUPA Director.
Currently, Karen is the Treasurer of the Board of the Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization (UPPO), the co-chair of UPPO Member Services Committee, a member of the UPPO Bylaws committee, a member of the Securities Transfer Association Unclaimed Property Committee, and co-chairs the Industry Subcommittee to the NAUPA Uniformity Committee. She has authored numerous unclaimed property articles and publications and is frequently a selected speaker at industry and trade association functions; i.e., the Association of Financial Professionals, the Institute of Management Administration, The Accounts Payable Network, etc.
Marcella Easly, Senior Compliance Advisor
Marcella is APS’ Compliance Specialist responsible for holder research, data analysis and State liaison. Marcella assists clients with technical data issues, and creates holder policy and procedure manuals. Marcella is retired from The Oregon Division of State Lands after 14 years as administrator of Oregon’s Unclaimed Property Program, Estate Administration, and Civil Forfeiture Units. During this time, she drafted major legislation and administrative rules, and implemented procedures to simplify and streamline the unclaimed property report/remittance for the State of Oregon. She is the former President of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) . She also served as Western Regional Vice President and chaired or served on many committees, including Holder Liaison, Federal relations, and Reciprocity. As NAUPA President, Marcella implemented holder-training seminars throughout the nation, which increased the awareness of the unclaimed property statutes. She designed and assisted in the creation of the holder reference handbook containing unclaimed property procedures and requirements for all States; and was an active participant in Congressional hearings that resulted in favorable rulings for persons with unclaimed deposits in failed financial institutions. She assisted with coordination, development and implementation of national property type codes to be used by holders when remitting unclaimed property electronically.
Jennifer Fine, Senior Manager
Jennifer, in her role as a Senior Manager, serves as an unclaimed property subject matter expert, with significant experience providing audit defense management, voluntary disclosure representation, gift certificate planning, policies and procedures assistance, and compliance services. She has provided unclaimed property advisory services for many large Fortune 500 companies in various industries including banking, insurance, entertainment, healthcare, oil & gas, telecommunication, retail and manufacturing. Jennifer’s experience and knowledge allow her the ability to provide clients with guidance and solutions to unclaimed property technical issues.
Before joining APS, Jennifer worked as a manager in the Unclaimed Funds Advisory Services group for Ernst & Young LLP, advising clients in all industries with unclaimed property matters. She was part of a national team of experts dedicated to providing unclaimed property solutions and guidance. Jennifer also spent some time working in Ernst & Young’s Tax-Exempt Organizations Tax Consulting practice, providing advisory services to many large tax-exempt clients, including healthcare organizations, private foundations and universities.
Hank McClusky, Senior Manager
Prior to joining APS in 2009, Hank was a Managing Director for KPMG LLP’s national unclaimed property practice. McClusky served as the Area Leader for the West and Southwest regions as well as the National Leader for compliance services. Hank has over 11 years of unclaimed property experience; both as a consultant and as the individual responsible for directing the unclaimed property program for one of the world’s largest entertainment companies.
His extensive unclaimed property experience includes audit defense, annual compliance, claim recoveries, planning strategies and solutions, policies and procedures, and voluntary disclosures and remittances. Hank has performed these services for various industries including, but not limited to, education, finance, food and beverage, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, professional services and retail. Hank has also been a regular speaker at seminars and conferences attended by Fortune 500 companies.
Richard Kim, Manager
Richard has represented various FORTUNE 500 companies in the defense of unclaimed property audits and in the performance of comprehensive diagnostic reviews, annual compliance, and amnesty agreements. Richard is also familiar with the historical development of the Uniform Unclaimed Property Acts, jurisdictional unclaimed property statutes, related unclaimed property case law, and jurisdictional administrative policies related to unclaimed property compliance.
Richard has represented numerous companies in multi-jurisdiction unclaimed property audits. Some of the companies he assisted were in the following industries: waste management services, rail transport, clothing retailing, fuel retailing, banking, healthcare, transportation, television broadcasting, and more.
Prior to joining Abandoned Property Services LLC, Richard was a Manager in the National Unclaimed Property Practice at KPMG LLP. Richard has a Bachelors of Science in Accounting and Masters of Business Administration from the University of Southern California. He is also California Certified Public Accountant.
Thomas Ross, Quantitative Analyst and Systems Coordinator
Tom is our Quantitative Analyst & Systems Coordinator. As Quantitative Analyst, Tom conducts statistical testing and quantitative analysis of company financial records in support of client voluntary compliance and audit-defense projects.
Tom is responsible for the overall system architecture of the APS report processing and archive system, and directs the work of our team Software Developer in ongoing R&D projects. He also works with our Compliance Specialist and state liaisons to ensure that the system embodies the most current and accurate state statutory and legislative information available.
Prior to joining APS, Tom worked as a financial analyst on IT infrastructure projects and in Six Sigma-based inventory and demand management analysis with J.P. Morgan Chase in their IT Finance Controller’s Group.
Jennifer Munsch, Compliance Coordinator
As the Compliance Coordinator, Jennifer is the client relationship liaison for all annual compliance issues, ensuring timely and accurate state filings on behalf of client companies. She works closely with the R&D team and Compliance Specialist to ensure that all client needs and concerns are taken into account and applied to our APS Processing/Reporting system.
Jennifer also provides holder advocacy services to our clients, including identification and quantification of holders’ unclaimed property exposure, assistance with mitigation of unclaimed property liability, preparation of voluntary disclosure documentation, and development of policies and procedures.
Prior to joining APS, Jennifer was a financial analyst in the abandoned property department at Deutsche Bank AG where she was responsible for the firm’s continued compliance and the development of corporate unclaimed property policies and procedures.
